Brentwood is known for its tree-lined streets, exquisite well-landscaped homes, privacy, and proximity to the running course on San Vicente Blvd. Brentwood is at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains where residents can take long hikes and strolls from multiple starting points, including Will Rogers State Park. The City of Santa Monica is to the southwest of Brentwood and provides residents with beach access, an outdoor shopping mall (the Promenade) and many public parks and recreation facilities. To the east is the 405 Freeway. The shopping district in Brentwood is gaining in popularity. The Coffee Bean and Starbucks sit caddy corner to each other on San Vicente Blvd. A newly remodeled Whole Foods supermarket gives the health conscious a place to shop and make new friends. Brentwood is an expensive place to live. There is an adequate supply of Brentwood apartments for rent along Barrington Ave south of Sunset as well as south of San Vicente Blvd to the east of Bundy. As of 2000, there were just over 22,000 housing units in Brentwood. Most Brentwood residents reside in single-family homes, many of which—while seemingly modest in size, style and acreage—would rarely sell for less than $750,000 due to the area's high housing costs. There are many spectacular mansions and multi-million-dollar estates located in the hilly areas north of Sunset. There are also large, modern apartment complexes and condominiums located on most of district's primary and secondary thoroughfares, many of which are home to young professionals and students attending nearby UCLA. According to the Los Angeles Almanac, the median value of a single-family home in Brentwood as of 2004 was $1.4 million.
